MEET THE FACULTY

Dr. Miguel Angel Minutti-Meza, PhD

Dr. Miguel Angel Minutti-Meza, PhD
Dr. Minutti-Meza is the department chair and professor of accounting at Miami Herbert Business School. He joined Miami Herbert in 2011. He was also a senior economic research fellow at the PCAOB from 2018-2019.
Dr. Minutti-Meza's research interests lie in capital markets, particularly in auditing, financial reporting, and methodology issues. He is working on various research projects related to audit reports, auditors’ use of experts, private transactions, and prediction models using machine learning, among other topics.
He is an editor of the Review of Accounting Studies, associate editor of the Journal of Accounting Research, and member of the editorial boards of Contemporary Accounting Review, Auditing: Journal of Practice & Theory, and Journal of Financial Reporting. He has published articles in these and many others. In 2020 and 2023, he received the Notable Contribution to the Auditing Literature Award from the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association.
Dr. Minutti-Meza's teaching interests are financial reporting, including financial accounting for MBA candidates, advanced accounting, cases in complex reporting areas, and PhD seminars on capital markets research. Recently, he developed the ACC 600, Accounting for Decision-Making and Control course for Miami Herbert’s online MBA.
He earned his PhD in accounting in 2011 and his master’s degree in management and professional accounting in 2005 from the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management. Previously, he received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from ITESM in Mexico.

Dr. Mark Maffett, PhD

Dr. Mark Maffett
After a decade as a faculty member at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Dr. Maffett joined Miami Herbert Business School in July 2022 as a tenured professor. In addition to teaching and research, he leads and coordinates the accounting PhD program. A licensed (inactive) certified public accountant (CPA), Dr. Maffett earned his PhD in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to this, he earned a Master of Arts in humanities from the University of Chicago and a Master of Science in accounting as well as a Bachelor of Science in analytical finance from Wake Forest University.
Dr. Maffett is an associate editor at the Journal of Accounting Research and is on the editorial board at the Journal of Accounting and Economics and the Accounting Review—the top three journals in the field. He also has industry experience, including working at a health care-focused investment banking firm and at a mid-tier accounting firm (in auditing, assurance, and financial accounting). Much of Dr. Maffett’s research focuses on the real effects of international financial reporting and disclosure regulation, including accounting standards, securities regulations, and auditing regulations. He has studied their impact on everything from mine safety and foreign corruption to health care prices, with fifteen papers published in journals including The Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Accounting Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, the Review of Accounting Studies, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Management Science, and Foundations and Trends in Accounting.
